What does the ODIN say .....

Hopefully something more substantial than the fox! ... (that song is still in my head after I let my kids get their hands on the radio!)

[EDIT: Added missing link to full analysis script]

Let's talk ODIN then ...

Now that we have more data from the ODINs we can start to build answers to the questions:

  • How uniform is the air pollution field in Rangiora?
  • Is the plume of emissions recirculated under certain conditions?
But there is a big caveat. The ODINs do not give us $PM_{10}$ and it cannot be directly compared to the measurements done by ECan. So ... let's dive in ... carefully.

First, let's review where we installed the ODINs. Our original intention was to locate them in two west-to-east lines, one to the north of the town and another one to the south. We were fortunate to be able to use lamp posts for our deployments and Sally and Sam managed to get them pretty close to where we wanted them.

This map shows the location of ECan's air quality station (black circle) and the sites for the six ODIN (red circles).

So, we got a fairly good coverage even if we only had six units and not all of them to the same level of workingness.

The first question is of course did they work? so we run a diagnostic analysis on the data and ... well ... it's complicated :-)
If you want to see the script we used and the results we got you can see them here but as a one line summary: the units performed as expected meaning that most of the sensors seem to respond to something not entirely unlike woodsmoke.

The plot below shows the time series from ECan's $PM_{10}$ together with the ODIN output and we can immediately see that two of these things are not like the others (yes, I have small kids), specifically ODIN_02 and ODIN_03 malfunctioned and didn't record data during large parts of this period and when they did, the data doesn't look like the other sites which makes those units suspect.
Never fear, last week we applied a firmware update to the units which, even if it doesn't fix them, will give use more information about how those units are performing.

Looking at the units that did report some sensible data we can see that there are some features (maxima and minima) present on all while other features are only present on a couple of series. Particularly interesting are the peaks around Aug-17 that are only present in ODIN_05 and ODIN_06 (to the north east of the town) but entirely absent from ODIN_04 and ODIN_07 (both on the western edge of town). On the other hand, just before Aug-31 there are increased concentrations observed by all four sensors.

So what does all this mean?
To us, it means that the sensors apparently respond to woodsmoke and that there seems to be spatial variation within the town but the mechanisms for that variation are not yet clear ... more data is needed!!
